The Hub in Woking will be closing its doors for the last time on Friday 24th March.

Hub Woking is part of the Surrey wide Hub project which is funded by Surrey County Council. Unfortunately due to a significant reduction in funding from central government and a need to make savings, Surrey County Council has taken the decision to reduce funding to the Hubs project. Woking Borough Council has also decided to no longer provide funding for this service.

Hub Woking opened in January 2012, as part of a county wide initiative to establish town centre locations that would provide information and access to advice and support services to members of the local community, including vulnerable and disabled people. Surrey Disabled People’s Partnership (SDPP), who were funded by the County Council to operate the Hub in Woking, has provided a disability information service in the town for 21 years.  Sadly, the charity has had to make the decision to no longer have an information service permanently based in the borough.

Hub Woking has been extremely successful in providing information and access to support to thousands of vulnerable residents as well as their families and friends. The Hub was also used by other organisation as a way of engaging with Woking’s residents.

Speaking about the closure, Clive Wood Chief Executive of SDPP said “We are obviously very disappointed that Hub Woking will be closing as this has been a well-used resource by the residents of Woking as well as community groups”. Clive went on to say “The Hub has been fortunate to have a great team of volunteers over the years, many of whom are disabled people themselves.  They have done a wonderful job and I would like to thank them for their amazing support”.  Christina Candey has volunteered at the information service for many years and said “I have been volunteering for SDPP for a long time. After all these years, it is so disappointing and heart breaking that this valuable and essential service is being taken away from the heart of Woking”.

The remaining hubs in Godalming, Staines, Redhill and Epsom as well as mobile hubs in West Surrey will continue to be funded by SCC until March 2018, when the service will end. SDPP will operate a pop-up Hub from March 6th at Woking library each Monday from 10.00 – 14.00
